Well, as you know, the next generation flagship processor from Apple, for its iPhones, iPads, and iPods, is the iOS 12. Much has been said and written about the iOS 11, the 2017 OS. It dropped support for a fan-favorite, the iPhone 5c, because it did not support 64-bit apps, and the newest OS supports only 64-bit apps. But that is all old news. What will be the iOS 12 compatible devices? Let’s find out.
iOS 12 Compatibility: List of Devices
The iOS 12 will obviously be one of the most powerful and advanced operating systems ever, with advanced AR capabilities. If the deciding factor this year was the 64-bit app support, next year’s list of compatible devices is likely to be the Augmented Reality (AR) Features and the native support for AR. Besides, some of the older devices, including the iPad Mini 2, the iPad Mini 3 and the original iPad Air do not yet support the Split View split-screen multitasking, while they do support Slide Over. We also believe that the A7 chip, which is aboard the Apple iPhone 5s, will be rendered extinct this year, making it very hard for the iPhone 5s to be supported for an upgrade next year. In all likelihood, the iPhone 5s will not make it to the iOS 12 compatibility list.
Apple, unlike Google and its Android platform, has always been known to keep all options open for older devices. It is likely that some device will be discontinued every year, given that the company has to remain profitable and newer devices are launched every year. The hardware and software angles are also changed every year. Hence, some devices remain unsupported.
In 2017, as the iOS 11 launched, users could still use their iPhone 5 and 5c devices, but they could upgrade only to the iOS 10 and no further. With 2018’s iOS 12, and the possibility that the iPhone 5s may be phased out, it is likely that the iOS 11 will be the end of the road for the latter device as well.
List of iOS 12 Compatible iPhones
The iPhones which will be compatible with the iOS 12 include:
- iPhone X
- iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
- iPhone 7 Plus
- iPhone 7
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
- iPhone SE
NOTE: It is very unlikely that the 5s will be supported. In case you are still using the 5s (not to mention the 5c and the iPhone 5 whose support ended this year), you will only be able to upgrade to the iOS 11 and no further. So, either consider purchasing a newer device or choose to stick to the iOS 10/11, depending on your device.
List of iOS 12 Compatible iPads
The iPads which will be upgradable to the iOS 12 is as follows:
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd Generation)
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st Generation)
- iPad Pro 10.5-inch
- iPad Pro 9.7-inch
- The iPad Air 2
- iPad Air
- iPad 5th generation
- The iPad Mini 4
- The iPad Mini 3
- iPad Mini 2.
iOS 12 Compatible iPods
The only member of this list is the iPod touch 6th generation. Since it has an A8 chipset, meaning that it is a 64-bit ARM-based system-on-a-chip or SoC, it will be upgradable to the iOS 12.
Thus concludes this list of the iOS 12 compatible devices. Not that Apple is not unlikely to tamper with this list next year, i.e. 2018. Stay tuned to us for any further updates.
